Solution: This business would use search trend data to distill insights about markets, industries, and future growth opportunities. It would focus in on providing these services as a consultant or as trading information for hedge funds.

Earlier this month, I came across The Financial Brand’s “2021 Google Search Trends in Digital Banking, Payments & Fintech.” They had a variety of phenomenal insights distilled from Google about finance from 2004 to today. Below are a few of the insights that I liked most,

Google Trends is about the closest thing you can find to a crystal ball. This free service allows users to examine search trends for any subject. You can compare multiple search terms to see which one is hotter, stretching all the way back to 2004.

Simon Rogers, a Data Editor at Google, built upon this by describing how,

Trends data is an unbiased sample of our Google search data. It’s anonymized (no one is personally identified), categorized (determining the topic for a search query) and aggregated (grouped together). This allows us to measure interest in a particular topic across search, from around the globe, right down to city-level geography.

This tool is extremely powerful: businesses, marketers, and individuals can see what the most popular topics are in extreme specificity. Want to know what people in your city thought about gun control after a recent election? Search data has the answer. Curious to know what musical artist would be the best to tour in your county? Search data has the answer. Learning to use Google Search trends, or better yet hiring someone who does, can be invaluable to growing a business organically through unpaid marketing or more intelligently through paid marketing. Similarly, many articles have been written about Keyword Research describing how this sort of deep-diving and predicting tends to work. Some have even explored the correlation between the stock market and search trend data.

In this work, we provide a brief description of the stock market and search engines, more specifically Google’s search engine. We then suggest some efficient methods to gathering historical stock price data and google search data. Additionally, we propose using a test that we created to explore the relationship, if any, of stock prices and the popularity of google searches. Finally, we share our results from the test and discuss the possibility of using the popularity of google searches to predict future stock price movement.
